2 cops wounded in anti-illegal drugs operation in Nueva Ecija

STO. DOMINGO, Nueva Ecija — Two police officers were wounded after they were shot by two men while the lawmen were carrying out an anti-drugs surveillance operation in this town late Tuesday (June 20), authorities said.
Investigators identified the wounded police officers as Staff Sergeants Bryan Raymundo and Rommel Abad, both assigned to the municipal police’s drug enforcement unit.
A report from the local police said one of the suspects, who was identified as Israel Andres, a farmer, was arrested, while his alleged cohort, Allan Maliwat, escaped.
An initial investigation disclosed that the lawmen were dispatched around 7 p.m. to do “casing and surveillance for possible anti-criminality and anti-drugs operations.”
More than three hours later, two men on board a tricycle suddenly stopped along the road in Barangay Poblacion and fired at the police officers using a still-undisclosed caliber.
Raymundo was hit in the stomach, while Abad was wounded in his right arm.
The victims were brought to a hospital, and a follow-up operation resulted in the identification of the suspects.
The police have not disclosed who the subject of the surveillance was.
