Phivolcs: Damages expected due to 5.6 earthquake in Samar

TACLOBAN CITY — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it expected damages and aftershocks due to a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that shook several parts of Leyte and Samar provinces at 12:57 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 20.

The tremor, which was tectonic in origin, had an epicenter in Calbiga town, Samar.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said power transmission services remained normal after the quake.

“The grid remains intact as there had been no reported cases of power interruptions and damaged transmissions facilities areas where the earthquake was felt,” it said in an advisory.

In Calbiga, the epicenter of the quake, employees of the municipal government including Mayor Red Nacario rushed outside the building.

“It was strong. It lasted for almost five seconds,” an employee of the municipal disaster risk reduction management office said.

No damage was reported.

In Tacloban, people who were inside offices, homes, and establishments also went out to the streets.

There are no classes in the city on Monday due to bad weather.
