Phivolcs: Two earthquakes rock Surigao del Sur
MANILA, Philippines — Two successive earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.2 and 5.1 struck the waters off Surigao del Sur on Wednesday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The first temblor hit 89 kilometers (km) east of Cagwait in Surigao del Sur at 10:44 a.m.

The magnitude 5.2 tectonic quake had a shallow depth of focus of 10 km.
State seismologists previously explained that a tectonic quake is caused by sudden movement along faults and tectonic plate boundaries.
According to Phivolcs, the earthquake did not register any reported or instrumental intensities, and they do not anticipate damage or aftershocks.
The initial earthquake was followed by another quake, striking 86 km off the waters of Cagwait at 10:56 a.m.
This magnitude 5.1 quake was also of tectonic origin with a depth of focus of 10 km.
State seismologists likewise do not expect damage or aftershocks from this second earthquake.

In early December last year, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off Hinatuan, also in Surigao del Sur, which Phivolcs said has caused over 6,500 aftershocks even weeks after it hit the province.
