MANILA, Philippines — Overcast skies with rains are forecast to prevail over several areas in Luzon and Mindanao due to the intensified effects of northeast monsoon (or amihan) and easterlies, the state weather bureau said on Wednesday.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) noted that the northeast monsoon will bring rainfall over more areas in Luzon.

“The effects of the northeast monsoon, or amihan, continue to intensify, and today, it has affected a significant portion of Luzon,” specialist Daniel James Villamil said in Filipino during an early morning weather report.

Pagasa’s advisory forecast Cagayan Valley, Apayao, Aurora, and Quezon to experience cloudy skies with rains due to the weather system.

On the other hand, generally fair weather may be expected in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, the weather specialist noted.

Meanwhile, the easterlies, or warm winds blowing from the Pacific Ocean, are expected to bring rainfall to areas in Mindanao.

“In Mindanao, specifically in the regions of Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, as well as in areas of Caraga and Davao Region, we may experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms,” Villamil added.

Residents in those regions were advised to watch out for potential landslides and flooding.

Outside these areas, however, generally fair weather conditions are also anticipated, aside from occasional chances of isolated rainfall due to localized thunderstorms.
