Moderate earthquakes rock Mindanao

Two moderate earthquakes hit Mindanao minutes apart on Thursday morning, February 29, 2024, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte — Two moderate earthquakes rocked Mindanao minutes apart on Thursday morning, state seismologists said.

The stronger magnitude 5.6 tectonic quake hit at around 8:23 a.m., with its epicenter estimated at 77 kilometers east of Cagwait town, Surigao del Sur, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tremor had a depth of 10 km.

Ten minutes earlier, a magnitude 5.3 quake also struck off Cagwait, with its epicenter traced some 86 km to the east.

It had a depth of focus of 9 kilometers.

Phivolcs said Intensity 5 was felt in Hinatuan town, Surigao del Sur. Intensity 4 was reportedly felt in the city of Bislig.

It was felt at Intensity 2 in Davao de Oro and Davao del Norte provinces, disaster offices in the two provinces reported.

No damage or aftershocks are expected, Phivolcs said.
