Retired volcanologist Eduardo Laguerta, 69

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK  – Eduardo Laguerta (seated) has been monitoring the country’s volcanoes since 1978.

LEGAZPI CITY — Retired Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Albay resident volcanologist Eduardo “Ed” Laguerta passed away on Saturday, Dec. 30, in his hometown in Irosin, Sorsogon.

He was 69.

His eldest daughter, Edna, confirmed that the veteran volcanologist, who was best known for his years of monitoring and interpreting the activities of Mayon Volcano, succumbed to heart failure at Irosin District Hospital at around 4 a.m.

Laguerta retired from Phivolcs in 2019.

Funeral and burial details are still being finalized.

“We are sad in the passing of my good friend Ed Laguerta, a long time partner in DRR in understanding and responding to the risks of Mayon and lahar,” Albay Second District Representative Joey Salceda said.
