Super typhoon Karding intensifies; Signal No. 5 in parts of Quezon, Signal No. 3 in NCR

MANILA, Philippines — Super typhoon Karding (international name: Noru) intensified further before noon Sunday and prompted state meteorologists to raise Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5 over parts of Quezon province.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) TCWS No.5 over Polillo Island and the extreme northern portion of Quezon (the northern and central portions of General Nakar, and the northeastern portion of Infanta).

Metro Manila and other parts of Southern and Central Luzon are under Signal No. 3.  Signal No. 4 is up over other parts of Central and Southern Luzon.

These areas will experience a “very intense typhoon” with very strong winds, Pagasa warned. 

“Karding” was spotted before noon some 175 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon, packing maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center with gustiness of up to 240 kph.

Signal No. 4 is up over the following areas as of 11:00 a.m.

  • Southern portion of Aurora (San Luis, Dingalan, Baler, Maria Aurora)
  • Northern portion of Quezon (the rest of General Nakar, the rest of Infanta, Real)
  • Southeastern portion of Nueva Ecija (Gabaldon, General Tinio, City of Gapan, Peñaranda)
  • Eastern and central portions of Bulacan (Doña Remedios Trinidad, Norzagaray, San Miguel, San Ildefonso, San Rafael, Angat, City of San Jose del Monte)
  • Northeastern portion of Rizal (Rodriguez, City of Antipolo, Tanay, San Mateo, Baras)
  • Extreme northern portion of Laguna (Famy, Siniloan, Santa Maria, Pangil)
