MANILA, Philippines – The new guidelines on the suspension of classes are now in effect starting Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, the Department 0f Education (DepEd) announced.

According to DepEd Order No. 37 series of 2022, class suspensions for online and face-to-face classes in all levels are automatically suspended once the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issues any tropical cyclone wind signal (TCWS), an orange or red rainfall warning, or a flood warning.

Schools are also required to suspend classes should Pagasa raise any of the aforementioned signals or warnings in the middle of the class day, the DepEd added.

In the same guidelines, local chief executives can also choose to suspend classes due to inclement weather. Under the Yellow Rainfall Warning, it is up to the local chief executive to decide on the suspension of classes.

Local chief executives also do not need a Pagasa-issued Flood Warning or TCWS if they need to suspend classes should their areas be affected by inclement weather.

During earthquakes, classes are automatically suspended if the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) declares the earthquake to be of intensity 5 or above, said the DepEd.

The DepEd made the announcement as class suspensions were announced by local government units due to Super Typhoo Karding.
